Ted Milton & BLURT

The Thunderbolt (map)

TED MILTON & BLURT

A gig held at The Thunderbolt on Friday 22rd June. The event starts at 19:30. The event has been tagged in the acid jazz, experimental rock, post-punk and art rock categories.

Ted Milton, returns to the Thunderbolt with his iconic eighties band, Blurt.Milton, like his namesake the poet, is a man with his own unique creative expression. Puppeteer-turned-eccentric saxophonist, he is perhaps the epitome of warped genius.

His nearly tuneful squawks and lyrics shouted like a newspaper seller are as  inspired as his song titles, which include My Mother Was a Friend of an Enemy of the People.

Founded in Stroud in 1979, the band were one of the early Factory records signings, and shared bills with Joy Division and A Certain Ratio before falling out of favour with Tony Wilson for likening the label to the lifestyle-chain Habitat. They were also championed at the time by John Peel.

The band have been through a number of line-up changes but never really went away, and continued to release albums and singles on a number of different labels, the most recent being Cut It! in 2010.

“This sprawling 14 track album perfectly encapsulates the sheer ferocity, ingenuity and originality that are BLURT” LOUDER THAN WAR
“Phenomenal live and on record and supremely underrated”  OPTIMO MUSIC
"UK modal sax-punk originals inna James Chance meltdown style. Blurt and Ted Milton are still a mutant jazz hurricane to be reckoned with, 40 years on from their first release." Headfirst

HIDE: 'Local 3 piece on a timeless quest to make their audience dance and cry simultaneously. Hide play  'sample-heavy' instrumentals featuring guitars, drums and heartfelt saxophone.'

Doors Open: 7.30pm Admission: £15 on the Door

The Thunderbolt (map)

TICKETS: https://www.wegottickets.com/event/600863

The Monochrome Set return to The Thunderbolt to promote their new album of 'Marc Riley Sessions from 2011 to 2022.'. The band feature original Monochrome Set members Bid (guitar/vocals) and Andy Warren (bass) with Athen Ayren on keyboards and Stephen Gilchrist on drums.
The Monochrome Set formed in 1978, and were heavily influential in the post-punk scene that evolved after the initial scorched earth of punk. The band's early releases were on the legendary Rough Trade Label before signing with Virgin offshoot Din Disc. They also released several albums on the Cherry Red label, making a notable appearance on that labels' well known "Pillows and Prayers" compilation.
Though The Monochrome Set split in 1985 the next decade saw several reunions for both live gigs and further studio recordings. After a hiatus of over a decade the band reformed full time in 2010 and have since toured all over the UK, Europe, Japan and the USA, whilst also releasing seven new, critically acclaimed, studio albums. Now in their 46th year, they are beginning a new series of gigs promoting their latest album and playing songs old and new.

Support from The Big However

Bristol based art folk garage indie collective. Using discarded musicians sourced locally. Melodic, intelligent, yet unintelligent popular music. Non-iconic & sustainable. "Poignant". Cello mandolin guitars bass drums clarinet accordion and soaring harmonies.

and These Vagabond Shoes

Long lost, 1986, Nottingham band These Vagabond Shoes finally make their Bristol debut. Entangled with early pre-Tindersticks in various confusing ways they managed to release one EP “Pale Blue Ties” as part of the Crimplene Collective before disintegrating due to some reason or other that no one involved can quite remember

HEARTBEAT RECORDS: Set up in 1978, to provide a platform for music from the Bristol (UK) area to reach a wider audience. Initially run as a partnership between Tony Dodd (Tony's Records, & ace guitar man) and Simon Edwards (local musician & manager), though after the first release Tony decided to concentrate on the shop & Heartbeat became a one man operation. A number of singles & albums were subsequently released around the label flagship "Avon Calling" - The Bristol Compilation LP, which went on to bring Bristol music much deserved critical acclaim & thanks to John Peel a good deal of national airplay. Bristol Archive Records

GLAXO BABIES: One of the greatest UK post-punk band you've never heard. Formed in Bristol in late 1977 and named after the British pharmaceutical giant who allegedly inoculated thousands with a toxic vaccine, the band's pioneering mix of metallic guitar, dubbed-out rhythms and shamanistic chants found its way into the bloodlines of generations on both sides of the pond. Naturally, Glaxo members later joined The Pop Group and Maximum Joy.: Superior Viaduct

The band recorded also various GREAT quality studio material that you’ll find here, in this amazing Lp. You can also hear the energy of the band with the three live tracks enclosed.Well, if you're a fan of Jam, Undertones, Buzzcocks… this band will change your ‘homelife’ !

SOCIAL SECURITY: SOCIAL SECURITY  The first band to have a record released on Heartbeat, and a true DIY producion - a four track EP recorded live in the drummers' basement.  Hailed as charming rustic by John Peel, the band also had tracks on the legendary Avon Calling releases. They were one of the hardest working live acts around, easily recognisable by the unique sound of the Vox Teardrop guitar. .

EH Presents JOHN OTWAY BAND

The Thunderbolt (map)

Ticket Link https://www.wegottickets.com/event/620330

From the age of 9, John Otway knew he wanted to be a pop star. But even at that young age, having listened to his sister's Beatles and Stones records, he knew he would never be able to do what they do. However, when his sister got the latest Bob Dylan album, he knew there was a place for him and he set about learning how to play guitar.

Otway had to wait until 1977 and the rise of punk before his dream of fame and fortune would finally become a reality. Having caught the eye of the producers of the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test, Otway's performance on that show would grab the attention of the watching audience. Otway, ever the showman, decided to jump on to the amplifier of his colleague during a performance of Bob Lind's Cheryl's Going Home. (Un)fortunately for Otway, he misjudged his leap and sent Wild Willy Barrett's amplifier tumbling as he crashed down straddling the box under the amp.
